Mrs. Linda Weckwerth, St. Monica School's Computer Technology instructor, is passionate about technology and the difference it can make for her students. With the resources available to her and her students in the St. Monica School computer lab, it's easy to see why she is so excited.
"We can do so many fun educational things in our computer lab," she said. "I love seeing the enthusiasm of the students -- they can't wait to get into the lab and begin learning!"
The St. Monica computer lab offers students an outstanding array of modern technology resources. Currently, there are 26 computers, all of which use Windows XP and XP Office. This is essentially a 1:1 computer to student ratio, allowing all students to have their own computer during lab instruction. All computers connect to the Internet via RoadRunner. A brand new, state-of-the-art color laser printer is also available to students for lab use.
The strategic plan developed by the St. Monica School Technology Committee resulted in a complete overhaul of all hardware in the lab over the course of the past three school years; beginning with the 2006-2007 school year, all 26 Dell computers in the lab are three years old or newer. Additionally, two digital video cameras and a digital camera are now part of the computer curriculum. And, thanks to the committee's planning and the generosity of an anonymous school family donor, the junior high classes (6th-8th) have 15 Dell laptops on a mobile cart available to them for in-classroom instruction and research use.
Mrs. Weckwerth, a veteran of nearly 20 years at SMS, teaches formal lessons Monday – Thursday. With the resources at her disposal, she is able to instruct students in Microsoft applications (i.e. Word, Excel, PowerPoint), specific graphic arts software programs (i.e. Kids Pics Deluxe 3), and modern-day topics (i.e. responsible and safe Internet usage). Additionally, Mrs. Weckwerth provides students in the primary grade levels (first through third grades) with a stimulating typing curriculum via the “Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing” and “Type to Learn 3” software. She encourages “buddy class” activities during lab instruction and works with teachers of all grade levels to foster cross-curriculum learning opportunities.
"I am so very grateful for the support of our school community -- school leadership and School Committee included!- and the involvement of our Technology Committee volunteers," exclaimed Mrs. Weckwerth. "I have never been more excited to be teaching our students about the many ways they can use technology to be more academically successful!"
