In addition to all five team members earning blue ribbons, Nicole Hangsterfer (7th grade) and Alex Beck (6th grade) advanced to the prestigious championship round. Nicole took second place in her group and Alex took second place in his group. Both received a medal for advancing to the championship round and a trophy for placing among the top finishers. Other team members who competed at the state meet included Jessie Bazan (6th grade), Dylan Mooney (7th grade) and Erin Lehrmann (6th grade).

What Forensics Meant to Me

SMS Class of 2004

I participated in forensics at St. Monica School since sixth grade and found it to be a very rewarding experience. Forensics gives students confidence and encouragement in public speaking, which is important in for many careers. During the three years I was a member of the SMS Forensics team, we enjoyed a great deal of success.

For those who are not familiar with forensics, it is a public speaking group. There are various categories from which to choose. Three popular categories are Poetry, Prose, and Impromptu Speaking. Participants choose the piece they are interested in and practice and rehearse a lot. Meets are typically held on Saturdays. At a meet you will be in a room with people in your same category and one other category. Each person recites his or her own piece. There are normally two rounds and a Power Round. The Power Round is when the person selected number one in the room is chosen to compete on a more competitive level. Blue, red, and white ribbons are awarded along with trophies. Three blue ribbons are needed in order to attend the State meet.

I strongly urge everyone who can to join forensics. I have found it extremely rewarding and useful. It is a very worthwhile skill that is useful all throughout life.
