Student Council Hosts Annual Carnival
Lily Vartanian
2006-2007 Student Council President

The St. Monica School Student Council started the New Year off with a bang by hosting one of the most enjoyed events of the school year, the Carnival. This event, held annually on the Friday of Catholic Schools Week (last week of January), is a great school-wide event in which everyone participates. Whether running a booth, serving treats, plastering casts, or simply enjoying the games, all SMS students are able to spend a bit of their day celebrating this fun and memorable SMS tradition!
Student Council worked very hard this year to make Carnival as fresh and exciting as all of the past experiences. The theme focused on “sports” and the games reflected that theme, with basketball, floor hockey, football, volleyball, baseball, soccer, and golf all being featured at the various booths. Students in K-4 through 5th grade were allowed the freedom to explore the games, win prizes, and eat some treats, while all junior high students ran the booths and helped the younger students. The junior high students were also responsible for all set-up and clean-up of the Carnival, but working together, this effort always seems to go very smoothly!
Carnival is something that every SMS student looks forward to each school year. Because of this, Student Council is very proud to host it and guarantee a great day for all! Special thanks to this school year’s Student Council advisors, Mrs. Naleid, Mrs. O’Neil, and Ms. Meyers, who helped make this successful event possible!

Student Council Enjoys a Banner Year!

2005-2006 Student Council President

This year our Student Council created a sense of pride in our school through a wide array of activities. We started by making our Student Council better, then we reached out to our school, and lastly, we incorporate our community. Our school has a great sense of pride, and a lot of things our Student Council does makes that pride even bigger.
By developing a sense of pride in our Student Council first, we provide motivation for later. At the beginning of the year we vote in order to pick eight students who fill the positions on our executive board. This establishes a sense of leadership throughout the entire Student Council. This year, Student Council involved over seventy people-- almost 75% of our junior high! Some times, we do simple things in order to bring pride to our Student Council. This year we had a pizza party that served as a fun start to a great year.
We also do big things, such as serving as tour guides during the open house for our school. Since we are a Catholic School, we incorporate our faith into our Student Council. We start every meeting with a prayer, and we hold an annual Student Council mass. Our Student Council learns to take pride in the faith-filled environment that surrounds us. The size, things we do, and faith aspect, all clearly show that we start establishing a sense of pride in our school by starting in the heart of our Student Council.
Our school has developed a great sense of pride this year, with help from the Student Council. Every Christmas we decorate the entire school with Christmas decorations that all of the students have made. The smiles on the kids’ faces and the shouts of “Hey look! There’s mine!” show just how much the kids feel they are a part of something special. We did "Secret Santa" with the teachers just to show how much we appreciate everything they have done for this school. This year the Student Council was able to do something very special for our school. When an accreditation team came to look at our school, we were given the opportunity to serve as tour guides. In a small way, we participated in the achievement of our school, receiving Exemplary status. The biggest thing we do for our school is hosting an annual carnival for the kids in grades K-4 to 5th. It is entirely Student Council run, and results in something that the entire school benefits from. We develop a sense of pride in our school by displaying and encouraging student’s work, appreciating the teachers, helping our school, and providing a fun place to be.
We have developed a great sense of pride in our school by reaching out to the community. This year we organized a committee to help Hurricane Katrina victims. With the committee’s guidance, the entire school brought in hygiene products for the victims. Our school is right next to numerous businesses. Through our carnival we have developed a relationship with them. Every year, members of our Student Council go to ask these businesses if they would be willing to donate gift certificates and other prizes towards our carnival. The businesses are always returned with gratitude, and they are left with a positive remembrance of our school. Our Student Council has helped the school feel a sense of pride through helping the community, whether it is far away or right next door.
At St. Monica School, our Student Council has instilled a deep sense of pride in our school. We start in the heart of our Student Council, and work our way out to the community. Smiling faces and treasured traditions prove that, and as our Student Council continues to grow stronger, so will our school.
